Women’s Health
Interventional radiology plays an important role in women’s health by providing minimally invasive treatments for various conditions that can affect fertility. One of the most common conditions that we treat is uterine fibroids with a procedure called Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE).
Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that can develop in the uterus. They are made up of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary in size, ranging from tiny to quite large. Fibroids can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure, and can also lead to fertility problems.
Adenomyosis
Adenomyosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus starts growing into the muscle wall of the uterus. This can cause the uterus to become enlarged and can lead to symptoms such as heavy and painful periods, pelvic pain, and bloating. Adenomyosis can also contribute to fertility problems.
Blocked Fallopian Tubes
The fallopian tubes are the pathways through which the eggs travel from the ovaries to the uterus, and if there is a blockage in the tubes, the egg cannot reach the uterus to implant and develop into a pregnancy. Blockages can be caused by a number of factors, including infections, endometriosis, or scar tissue from prior surgeries.
